Guest Post from Tricia Lorntson: How to NOT Skyrocket from Nobody to Somebody as an Indie Author

ConfessionsCover

My name is Tricia Lorntson and I’m an egoholic. Crowd: Hi, Tricia! This is a public service announcement and a cautionary tale for struggling writers everywhere. Your odds of becoming instafamous are only marginally higher than your chances of winning the PowerBall. You? Are not special. Don’t believe your mother—she has to tell you that. Let me give it to you straight, and in third person for dramatic effect:   Once upon a time in 2011, a girl named Tricia was writing a book and had what she believed to be enough of a budget to release this book into the wild where it would surely draw international fame and fortune. She met with the owner of a local collaborative… [read more]

3 Ways to Market Your Book RIGHT NOW!

shutterstock_133636346

If you’re an indie author, you know that writing, publishing, and marketing your book is an incredibly busy job, and one that really doesn’t end once the book is out. In fact, this job doesn’t end as long as you still want your book out into the world. Book publishing is kind of like parenting–it’s not like your job ends after the nesting and delivery process, because then you have to raise your child. The fact is, YOU ARE ONE PERSON! You can only do, in one day, what one person is capable of doing in a day. Also, remember that life you had? With the friends, spouse, kids (real–not paper or e-ink), pets, etc.? Yeah, they’re still important. So… [read more]

Making Time for a Dream: Interview with Mystery Author Deborah K. Jensen

Escape_cvr_3D

never did I think that I wanted to or could write a novel. But the gift of a dream was given to me… This week, we were fortunate enough to sit down with Deborah K. Jensen, an inspiring indie author with a killer book called Beyond Escape, an exciting new novel based on a true story with family secrets, betrayal, murder, and lust. She shared with us how she melded this true story with one of fiction, and how she found time to make her dream a reality.   1) You’ve been writing for many years. Did you always want to write mysteries? When I was a young girl, I fell in love with the idea of writing and told my… [read more]

Writers: Live In Your Potential

shutterstock_125525336

You are smarter, braver, and more capable than you know. The best advice I’ve (Amy) ever gotten. This very simple statement allows us to leave the space where we only measure ourselves by our proven skills, and move INTO a space where we are fully aware that there are heights and depths and mountains and canyons that we CAN reach. While the rest of the world might measure you by your proven achievements, YOU must measure yourself by the achievements yet to be had. Without living in the presence of your full potential, you won’t seek to reach it. You won’t even know it’s there! What frightens you about becoming an author? Is it the work that you’ll have to… [read more]

The Best and Only Writing Advice You’ll Ever Need

shutterstock_85637635

Two weeks ago I (Dara) shared  a really cool novel idea with my husband Tomme. We were at the movies and mid action scene, I poked him in the arm, leaned over (ignoring his obvious annoyance), and whispered my idea with child-like glee. Never mind he could barely hear me.   I was just proud to share it with someone. In my mind once you share your book idea, you’re obligated to write it. Or at least try. It’s a legal contract I have with myself. My brain believes I must make it happen because I’ve spoken it into existence. But here’s the deal. Since I had my idea, I’ve thought about it nonstop. Yet, I’ve written one paragraph in… [read more]

It’s 2013, Authors! Make It a Rewarding New Year

shutterstock_115610851

Happy 2013! It’s  been an exciting, eventful, and insightful year for Wise, Ink. We are approaching our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY next month (our first post was February 1, 2012) and since then we’ve learned a TON. We learned that indie authors are even more amazing than we originally thought, with all the great comments and feedback we’ve gotten from you! We’ve learned the true value of social media as we’ve used it to spread the word about our own blog, and are so grateful for the wonderful followers we have. Dara released her first book, The Indie Author Revolution, and is having a blast stepping into the author’s shoes to market the book. Amy has been busily writing her master’s thesis… [read more]

How to Create a Useful Style Sheet

shutterstock_111523991

Many authors assume they don’t need to be conscious of style choices because it is understood that the editor will fix style choices. Other authors use the excuse of “just getting the words on the page” to get out of using a consistent style as they write. Using a consistent style (and being conscious enough to make consistent style choices) will force you to think about your audience; for example: Hmmm . . . I am writing a military story for the general public . . . should I use all military acronyms throughout, or should I remind my audience of what they stand for at the beginning of each new chapter? Using a consistent style will also make you… [read more]

shutterstock_114593455

Happy Holidays, writers! They’re almost here! Did you get everything done? Me either. My to-do list is almost as long as it was on Monday of this week, yet I’ve been rushing and running and scrambling for the last five days! It makes me wonder what I was actually working on all week. So what about writing? Does writing have a role in the busy day-to-day holiday preparation? Below are a few ideas on how to keep up with it! 1) Make a list of your priorities. Your probably have a to-do list (and a long one at that). Is it organized? Where does writing fit? Time to put an order  to all the things you have to do this… [read more]

5 Things on the New Year’s “To-Do” List for Every Purpose-Driven Author

shutterstock_117877717

I know–you’re not even through the “holidays” yet, and you’re just feeling like you finally have a grasp on your “to-do” list for the next week and a half. Me too. I’m not necessarily looking forward to working on my next to-do list that comes after the holidays–specifically writing my thesis on the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon (what it means for publishing versus the present state of feminism–thanks for letting me ramble for a minute) and editing two manuscripts–because I’ve finally gotten around to prioritizing my current to-do list! However, I actually am looking forward to the rewards of engaging with the projects on my to-do list. This is because the holidays provide such a wonderful, cleansing, refreshing time… [read more]
