The 4 Most Important Words in Self-Publishing

  • Buffer

Self-publishing isn’t for the faint of heart and there’s quite a bit to learn. It requires a level of time, focus, and determination that most who try it, become quick learners…or else. If there are four words that you must know going in, here they are. Etch them in stone, write them down, put them under your pillow, and commit them to memory.

1. Audience

If you’re writing and/or publishing because it would be awesome to have a book–rethink your objective. If you want your book to reach the masses and be well received, remember the golden rule of authorship: your book is not about you. Successful indie authors put their audience first.

2. Plan

Think through the plan before you leap into self-publishing. The main downfall of indie authors is a lack of planning. Here’s a great post of other avoidable mistakes indie authors make. Bottom-line: think through who will help you edit, design, and print (or make it eBook ready) before publishing. But even more critically write down the ways you intend to market your book–direct sales, trade shows, book fairs, signings, speaking engagements. Start brainstorming all the details before you start writing checks.

3. Vision

Your vision is the most vital ingredient of what makes not just your book unique, but you, the author. Remember that readers will connect with you in addition to your content. What’s your purpose? Why have you written your book? What’s your personal story? What drives you? Your answers to these questions can all be used in various ways to uniquely position your book, connect with readers, color your writing style, and most importantly help you stand out from the crowd.

4. Quality

Your book is a product that readers will buy. Put time, thought, and money into making it the best. Don’t skimp on editing and design because readers will know right away. A book with a poor cover design or lack of editing are roadblocks for readers. Also, your book is likely a small piece of a larger picture. If your book isn’t put together thoughtfully, your reputation will suffer, which hurts your big picture. A little research goes a long way. Find the right people to help within your budget, but do not, and we repeat, do not sacrifice quality.

So here they are, our 4 ingredients for successful self-publishing. What are your words? What would you add to the list?
